Respecting the Birth Space as a Photographer

Respecting the Birth Space by Lauren Hodges // So you want to be a birth photographer? Let’s talk about an often missed subject on becoming a birth photographer: Respecting the birth space. What does this mean? Obviously, this is going to be different for each birth you are a part of, but ultimately you need to remember these essential things if you are going to be a successful birth photographer.

Respecting the Birth Space as a Photographer

It all starts with respecting the mother. This goes back to the day she books with you. I find it so valuable to send her a questionnaire, find out what moments are most important to her and her significant other. Discover if there were any complications in her past deliveries. Did she have a birth plan? Will they be comfortable with flash if the situation calls for it?

Mother and Baby

This allows you to give them an idea of what to expect from you and lets them feel safe in setting expectations of what they want out of this experience with you. When the delivery day comes, feel it out when you walk in the room. Has she had an epidural and feeling light and excited? Or is she breathing and working through contractions? Come in quietly and wait for them to acknowledge you and give a soft smile. Do not announce your presence loudly; treat this situation like a spa or library.

C-Section Birth

I usually pull out my equipment and set my bag out of sight, and out the way completely. Most of your clients will initiate conversation, but some will be in the zone and may not even notice you have come in. Just go with it. Start photographing as a fly on the wall. It is so important to remember that you are documenting, not posing.

I do not ask them or anyone to move around for the shot unless they offer. If my clients are resting and everyone has stepped out, I will usually grab a couple more shots and do the same. Giving them some one on one time is important.

Respecting the Birth Space as a Photographer

Respecting the doctors, midwives, nurses, and doulas- otherwise known as the birth team, is of utmost importance. Remember this is not your territory, you are a guest in their workspace. Familiarize yourself with rules and policies before entering into the space and most of all: stay out of their way! I move and work around the nurses and doctors, and always have my spot picked out for where I will stand during delivery and have it ready ahead of time.

If it becomes inaccessible, you go with the flow! It is important to read the situation when things aren’t going well, this will not be always be announced. Be sure you are always out the way, and if they ask you to leave the room, or put your camera away, you do it.

Water Birth Phtos

Please do not stand on anything they are using to work. Always bring your own step stool because more than likely, you will need it. Be sure to respect their privacy and ask that they are ok with being in the image, most are excited at the opportunity of images of them doing what they love. Go above and beyond and email them the images that they are in! Create relationships with them because chances are you will be working with them on multiple occasions.

Birth Photos

This should go without saying but please have your phone on silent, and if you are going to eat, do so in another room. Your client may not be allowed to eat, and even if she is allowed, the smell could make her feel sick. Also remember that you are not a trained professional and no matter how many births you have seen and been a part of, you do not have a say in what goes on.

YOU set the tone for every birth photographer that walks into that space. Do not be the one that ruins this opportunity for other professional photographers. If you are new to this, seek guidance and mentorships from medical professionals and respected birth photographers.

Respecting the Birth Space

If you respect the birth space, you will be allowed opportunities that you wouldn’t have otherwise been allowed. I was invited into the OR with one of my clients because of my relationship with the medical team, my professionalism, and my respect for the space and team.

This leads me into my next topic: Cesarean Births.

Respecting the Birth Space as a Photographer

If you are allowed back into the OR for a cesarean birth, congratulations! You are one of few. Only recently have they begun to allow photographers into this space. Please make yourself aware of all of the rules, and remain quiet, a fly on the wall- as always. If you have an important question about what you are allowed to do, ask a nurse first, or don’t do it. If you are weary around surgical procedures, or blood, it’s best not to go in.

They don’t need another person to have to worry about or take care of. Being allowed into the OR is so important for these mamas. Many haven’t had time to prepare for this or expect it. Seeing their beautiful images through someone else’s eyes allows them healing they may not have otherwise had.

Cesarean mothers are fierce and strong and they deserve for their story to be told, and should be allowed the opportunity to have their birth photographed. When photographing a C- section, focus on the journey, the relationship between mother and father, babies first breath, and those emotive moments when the baby is here. It is a beautiful opportunity, so be mindful of the guidelines and hopefully, you will be allowed back in that sacred space again and again.

Life and Loss and Postpartum

Family Photo

Postpartum // A new life is growing inside of you…and you’re thrilled. Beside yourself that you get to add another one to your crew; a brother finally for your oldest son who’s weathered two little sisters after him. Excitement, joy, and a teeny bit of terrifying thoughts of being doubly-outnumbered adding the fourth kiddo to your family.

But it’s fine, doable, and going to be totally incredible to have two boys and two girls who call you mom. Absolute perfection. And then it’s not. You go in for your 19-week anatomy scan solo because this is baby number four and there’s no need to wake your night shift working husband to come with you for something he’s done three times prior.

Everything is always fine and it’s just a routine ultrasound. You’ve had textbook pregnancies before, and minus just needing help in getting them out (thank you c-sections), you’ve had three perfectly healthy babies. This is routine. But it wasn’t. Thirty seconds into the scan you know it’s anything but — something is wrong.

You see it written on the tech’s face as she quickly puts the wand down after barely three minutes and says she’s going to get your doctor. Do you call your husband to come up? Do you frantically try and google the ‘edema’ problem she briefly mentioned? No. You sit there numb.

Praying and hoping that whatever she saw is no big deal, she just wants a second set of eyes…eyes from a doctor — your doctor — who you love and trust and surely will have something good to say. She doesn’t. She holds your hand, tells you your sweet little boy has a lot of problems, fatal problems, and that you won’t be meeting this little one in February, but probably much sooner, and not awake.

Crippling, crushing words choke you up as you fumble with your phone and hand it off through tearful sobs to your doctor so she can talk to your husband and fill him in on what’s happening. It’s all a bit surreal — how is this happening? My other kids are healthy, this one was supposed to be too! But he’s not. He’s far from it.

Life and Loss and Postpartum

You meet with high-risk doctors and specialists and geneticists to try and figure out what’s going on with your little man. But they don’t have answers — there’s no explanation for his hydrops and severe skin edema and cystic hygromas.

The tests all come back negative, and you are left waiting, hoping for a miracle, still carrying this sweet little boy who you have named Clark after his great-grandmother’s most favorite movie character, Clark Gable.

BW Maternity Photo

The waiting is torturous. The unknowns of what’s to come so scary, navigating waters ahead seemingly blindfolded. But you share, your blog, you document, you create self-portraits with your son nestled snuggled up inside of you, his heart still beating strong, in hopes that it will be doing the same when you meet him.

And then, suddenly, it stops. Something changes, something doesn’t feel right, and in the lull between appointments and ultrasounds you hastily send a frantic text to your OB and she instructs you to go into Labor & Delivery for bloodwork. When you get there the sweet nurse, who has just been briefed on your pregnancy by your doctor who called ahead for you, can’t find your baby’s heartbeat.

And you lose it. Because as quickly as you found out he was on the way, he is gone, forever sleeping inside of you until he is delivered. Debilitating devastation overwhelms you and you compose yourself enough to drag yourself to the car, wrapped in your husband’s arms, both fighting back the treacherous sobs that consume you.

You wait for your doctor to call you about when you’ll deliver because even at 22 weeks he’ll need to come via c-section. Major surgery and no sweet little babe to distract you from the pains of a repeat cesarean is what lays ahead soon. It’s decided Clark will arrive the next day, another 24 hours you have with him. And even though his heart wasn’t beating, you have comfort knowing he is warmly inside of you for a bit longer.

Numbness encompasses you. You want to do nothing because you all of a sudden don’t know how to do anything. You sit and cry, holding onto your husband, and wondering what possibly went wrong with your little boy. Your phone rings and it’s your amazing birth photographer and friend, telling you to come to do maternity pictures. You don’t want to, you don’t want to do anything.

But she doesn’t take no for an answer…so you go. And hours later, you are so glad you did. She captures a pregnancy cut too short yet all of the love and joy his short little life brought you, and you are forever grateful to her for that.

Life and Loss and Postpartum

Life and Loss and Postpartum

You decide to snap one final self-portrait before the most wonderfully difficult day of your life. Your last picture of carrying your son, just you and him.

Life and Loss and Postpartum

Choking back tears, you tell your big kids that their little brother isn’t going to be coming home with you from the hospital. You explain, the best way you can to three kids under 6, that their brother had some problems that the doctors couldn’t fix and that he died…but he’ll live on in their hearts forever. And you cry together, with all of your children sitting around the kitchen table, longing for what could have been.

But what could have been isn’t what is, and all of a sudden you’re wiping back tears again, hugging your OB who’s come in to assist the high-risk doctor on your c-section, and giving your husband a final kiss before being taken back for a fourth c-section.

Life and Loss and Postpartum

Life and Loss and Postpartum

Life and Loss and Postpartum

The tears flow freely down your face. The OR, something you’re so familiar with being a birth photographer yourself and capturing the happy birth stories for others, is hauntingly quiet. No one is saying anything. No announcement of a baby being born, no “it’s a boy!” declarations, no nurses ogling over how cute he is. Just silence.

Life and Loss and Postpartum

You crane your neck to see your little boy in the warmer…which isn’t even turned on. You strain through the tears to see your husband lovingly holding your son and putting a hat on his head.

Postpartum

He is just perfect. A perfect sleeping little babe. Your fourth child, your perfect little angel.

Life and Loss and Postpartum

Life and Loss and Postpartum

Your husband brings him over to you so you can see him, hold his hands, admire his little features you can make out perfectly through his very swollen skin. And you cry. You cry a lot, the tears stream down your face uncontrollably and you close your eyes, forcing them away, forcing it all to be a bad dream.

Life and Loss and Postpartum

Life and Loss and Postpartum

But it’s not. You wake up and you’re being moved to recovery with a sleeping babe in your arms. Wheeled past rooms in which very much awake babies are being born.

Life and Loss and Postpartum

Life and Loss and Postpartum

Your big kids come up to meet their brother, something you wrestled back and forth with but decided they needed to come, need closure, needed to meet their brother and tell him hello and see you later all at the same time.

Your parents come, and husband’s parents. They want and need to see their new grandson.

Life and Loss and Postpartum

Life and Loss and Postpartum

You snap a few pictures, a family picture, a selfie, and then he’s gone — everyone’s gone. It’s just you, a fresh 8 inch incision on your belly, an empty womb, breasts that will soon be full of milk, and a huge hole in your heart. You cry, you cry a lot.

The days since Clark’s birth drag on, new highs and lows come with each of them. You ride this wave of grief day in and day out, all while being thrown in to the depths of postpartum…a postpartum you are no stranger to, because this isn’t your first time giving birth, but it’s your first without a baby to distract you from the harsh realities of the fourth trimester.

Life and Loss and Postpartum

You realize postpartum is raw and ugly and its truths are seemingly always disguised behind a baby…yet there’s no baby this time.

You pump milk for someone else’s babe to relieve engorgement, change pad after pad that’s soaking up the horrendous postpartum bleeding that seems to be infinitely worse this time around for some reason, pop pain pills like candy, because for some reason that dull ache in your abdomen just won’t go away, almost like it knows its occupant was vacated four months too early, endure countless sleepless nights and so wish it was because a newborn’s tiny cries were keeping you up instead of the tremendous anguish of missing his presence.

Life and Loss and Postpartum

A month ago you held him in your womb, and now you hold him in your arms, just a little differently than most do one month postpartum. It’s overwhelming — the sadness, the anguish, the grief. Nothing tastes good, nothing feels good, you just are going through the motions.

Life and Loss and Postpartum

But you push on. You keep going. Because somewhere, something deep inside of you tells you you have to. You keep sharing your thoughts, keep documenting your journey, keep taking pictures. You swim out of the dark abyss and are surrounded by love and support, outpouring from all areas.

You’ve shared your story and your friends and family have heard it and wrap you in their arms, sending messages and flowers and dinners and puzzles and books for your big kids and you are overwhelmed with it all. You miss your little boy terribly, but the good that others are showing you is a glimmer of light, of hope. You commit yourself to paying it forward, to helping others, to sharing your story in that maybe, just maybe one person will be helped in their grief as so many helped in yours.

No one talks about loss — the life that was very much there, then wasn’t, and then the aftermath that engulfs you. It’s so hush-hushed, so silenced. But there are so many who endure this in the dark, in the quiet. You are not alone. You do not have to walk this path by yourself, because it is a path that no one should have to walk that way. You’ll hold your babe forever in your heart, but don’t have to do so in silence.

Talk about them, share about them, break the stigma and taboo that loss needs to be keep quiet. Loss sucks. It sucks so much.

But knowing you don’t need to suffer and grieve quietly helps the teeniest of tiniest of bits.

A Home Birth By Stephanie Cabrera

Home Birth // It’s a fantastic feeling to do what you truly love and for others to be so receptive of it. Never would I ever have thought the response would be what it is and it continues to be.

A little over six years ago I found out that we were expecting our 2nd baby and immediately knew I wanted to go through this home birth differently.

Images by STEPHANIE CABRERA

Home Birth Photos

Birth

I decided to have a water home birth with a Midwife and Doula. With much research and preparation, I experienced the most empowering feelings I’ve ever come to know, the power that we have of giving life.

I became obsessed with our bodies, our potential, and the ability we indeed possess as women.

Maternity Birth

Pain of Birth

Mother giving Home Birth

Years went by…and eventually a spark ignited it all. This slow season I vowed to focus on myself, on doing what makes me happy not what makes me more money.

I had wanted to photograph births for so long, here was my chance. I posted about my availability, and someone replied right away.

Water Birth

Water Birth Photos

She was due very soon, this felt like a great way to start building up my portfolio immediately. Not knowing much about Shauntay, whose home birth I’d be witnessing and photographing, I prepped all my stuff for the big moment.

On Sunday, January 8th around 3:30 am I receive a call from Shauntay’s midwife…she’s in active labor!

Home Birth

Pain while giving Birth

Shauntay had been dealing with pain for about seven days already with Prodromal labor, and we all knew she was exhausted. I jumped out of bed grabbed my bag and left.

As I rushed over to her house I couldn’t help but feel relief and anxiety for Shauntay, she had been through so much and today would be the day. She would have a water home birth.

Mother giving birth

Home Birth

When I got there, things were a bit calm, but you could feel the mental and emotional activity happening. Mama was giving it to her all through the contractions.

She was tired; she felt defeated; I get it I’ve been there. ‘you have to do this,’ ‘no one else can do it for you’ ‘you have to do this now cause this baby is coming’ that’s what we all knew she felt.

Home Birth

Relief after Birth

That feeling of being defeated but having to continue somehow. She sent everyone other than her Midwife (Bethany Stricker) and Doula (Courtney butts) out of the room.

Two assistant Midwives (Jennifer Mozeke) (Becky Thorpe) and I waited anxiously outside of the door as momma screamed and roared in the other room.

Home Birth Photography

Mother and newborn

We waited for quite a bit until a bit of silence we had was broken by a loud shout “I have to push now!” We all ran in like a pack of lionesses tending to their young and got ready to welcome this beautiful being into our world.

With everyone ready to help her and I ready to document within a minute she lets out the biggest roar of the night, with that push the baby crowned.

Water Birth

Water Home Birth

Followed by what can only be described as; a roar unlike any other, not loud, not shrill, a roar of accomplishment, strength, and power, the ‘roar of life.’ She had been reaching down, and when he was out, she pulled him close to her chest as fast as she could.

Birth Story Photography

Birth Story Photography was not something I planned on doing on the regular. I thought I’d try it once, probably be so overwhelmed that I wouldn’t do it again, but I was wrong.

Photos of Childbirth

After just photographing the first birth of a child, I was hooked, and soon people were buzzing about that I was photographing births and I started getting more women who were interested in booking with me.

It’s harder to book a birth because you must be on call 24/7 for anywhere from a week to 2 months because as you know babies don’t arrive according to any other plans but their own.

Photos of Childbirth

And coverage could be anywhere from 2 to 30 hours. You could get called at 3 in the afternoon or 1 o’clock in the morning, there is nothing straight forward about doing birth photography, but that’s what makes it exciting and rewarding is how unique each experience is.

Why Birth Photography is so rewarding to me by Brianna Waltman

For me, birth photography is so rewarding because I am honored to witness and be part of the most intimate moments in someone’s life.

Even more than the mother experiencing labor and delivery, I also witness siblings and parents and grandparents as they are also a big part of the process.

Why Birth Photography is so rewarding to me by Brianna Waltman

It’s rewarding for me to be able to add assistance in for the mother where I can, and I love learning about the entire process so I can help educate my clients on what to expect.

It’s rewarding to see the different environments and approaches that women take when bringing their baby into the world. I’ve photographed births at hospitals, birthing centers, and homes.

Why Birth Photography is so rewarding to me by Brianna Waltman

Birth Story Photography

I have even had a client once have her baby in the truck on the way to the hospital. When I was born, I was born at home and I will always cherish that special part of me, and I believe that’s a big part of why I feel so connected to birth.

Being at home is sacred and I believe it is the perfect place to bring a baby into the world, and I really think it’s beginning to make a come back especially the more normalized it becomes by shedding light on just how beautiful that process can be.

Photos of Childbirth

When I documented the birth of Alakai, Ashley was able to eat all she wanted, she was able to roam her house freely and the most important people (and pets) were able to play major roles in the whole process.

Ashley may not have recalled many of these moments had I not documented them, so for her to be able to reflect on the event outside of her pain and focus, gives me great joy from my birth story photography.

Birth Story Photography

I’ve always loved delivering images to people and they express how they had no recollection of certain things had it not been for my photos.

Sometimes one photo can ignite multiple memories otherwise lost, which is a miracle on its own. It’s rewarding for me to give moments back to people that didn’t even realize those moments were occurring until later.

Home Birth Photography

Some moments are not even moments that involve people but objects that tell parts of the story such as the list of possible baby names hung in the kitchen, or the memory that I will never forget when Alakai’s grandfather began to gently play the piano moments after his birth.

Birth Story Photography

That’s rewarding for me to witness, these innocent moments that can’t always be documented but simply felt and remembered by those who were present, and being given the job to translate them into telling a story.

Why Birth Photography is so rewarding to me by Brianna Waltman
It was never discussed but I was lead to believe that Alakai’s grandfather may have had early symptoms of dementia. I believe this to be so because of when he played the piano, his wife went to him to quietly tell him that it was not an appropriate time to play ( I thought it was hehe)

And if you look closely there’s an image where Ashley is using the toilet and the grandfather is at the kitchen sink wearing 2 pairs of glasses. These moments are rewarding for me to document as I always look for the out of the ordinary moments during my birth story photography.

Birth of a Child – A Mother’s Perspective by Lisa Aamot

Birth of a child// Birth Photographer Lisa Aamot, one of our Best Birth Photography Artist of 2018, wanted to share some words about the way giving birth, changed the way she sees life.

Birth of a Child - A Mother's Perspective

The art of giving birth is nothing short of magic. If I’m honest though, I used to sit right in the middle of the camp that wanted nothing to do with birth photography. That is until I became a mother myself.

Birth of a Child - A Mother's Perspective Birth of a Child - A Mother's Perspective Birth of a Child - A Mother's Perspective

I have given birth twice now, and although it may sound strange, those two days will forever be my favorite days in this lifetime. There’s no perfect words or way to really describe what takes place in a birth room – unless you have gone through it, or been a witness to its magic.

Birth of a Child - A Mother's Perspective Birth of a Child - A Mother's Perspective Birth of a Child - A Mother's Perspective
Becoming a mother has changed the way I photograph life. I see the beauty of it from the lens that only a mother can see through. I know first hand how fleeting those moments are.

Birth of a Child - A Mother's Perspective

The pain of labor feels long and exhausting, but the moment you lay eyes on that impossibly small human, it’s a split second you endured. None of the pain matters. I know first hand that strange feeling of a wet hot baby on your chest will become something you will miss deep in your bones.

Birth of a Child - A Mother's Perspective

Those first split seconds of saying hello to someone that already knows you so well. In some beautiful way, you are meeting the most familiar stranger.

There are some images of birth that capture that unspeakable beauty. Those powerful moments of agony intertwined with relief and bliss close to the birth of a child. Every time I capture motherhood I find myself focused on the emotion.

Birth of a Child - A Mother's Perspective
On the tiny details, and the in-betweens. The seemingly unimportant moments that pass so quickly they fall between the cracks of our memory – like a partner lending their hand to be squeezed, or the moment a mother first lays eyes on her child.

Birth of a Child - A Mother's Perspective

One day that same mother will wake up to a pitter patter of tiny feet sneaking off to make a mess. One day that same mother will wake up to a grown child that has no trace of sweet thigh rolls or wrinkles in strange places.

Birth of a Child - A Mother's Perspective

That mother should have moments captured to look back on and hold onto. To find comfort, and a small slice of the magic she once experienced. That is my goal as a mother. To give other mothers a concrete bit of that magic back.
